NO MATCH — AU’s Kirstin Gephart reaches for a ball during the Eagles loss to the University of Maryland. The Eagles, while a strong team overall, were no match for the Terrapins. It is no surprise, since UMD is the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. The team plays Holy Cross next on Oct. 3.

UMD defeats AU 3-0

AU field hockey trailed early and was never able to gain momentum against No. 1 University of Maryland on Tuesday, losing 3-0. The UMD Terrapins immediately controlled the tempo of the match in the first half, dominating possession of the ball. Two minutes after the start of the game Katie O’Donnell of Maryland scored an unassisted goal, forcing the Eagles into an uphill battle against the defending NCAA champions. “We gave up a very disheartening goal,” Assistant Head Coach Sarah Thorn Krombolz said. “We have to take ownership of our defensive circle and that in no way should have been a goal if we did that.” Maryland’s early goal jumped started the Eagles defense. AU restricted the Terrapins to four shots on goal and two penalty corners in the first half. Eagles goalie Alyssa Poorman made a diving save in the tenth minute, one of two impressive saves for the match.

Yankees not unbeatable

This time last year, the New York Yankees were closing their historic stadium on a sad note. They did not qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons. On top of that, they were forced to watch the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays battle for a trip to the World Series.

Today’s sports devoid of emotion

As I settled in for a quiet night in the dorms, I turned on the television to see what was going to be my nightly entertainment. I flipped mindlessly through the channels, realizing that maybe watching television is not the best idea on a Friday night. When I was just about to give up hope, I was relieved to find a classic movie on TV.

Momentum will shape field hockey season

The first half of each game has been a killer for the Lady Eagles, as they have rarely taken the lead early in games. Even in their blowout win over Towson, they didn’t take command of the game until the second half, when they scored six goals en route to an 8-1 win. From watching their play, it is clear they are unable to keep their concentration earlier.
