Predicting the 2009 Big Dance

Win or go home. That is what it comes down to for NCAA Men's basketball teams that are fighting for the last few positions in March's NCAA tournament. The NCAA tournament consists of 65 of college basketball's best teams. Of those 65 spots, 31 teams receive automatic bids by winning their conference tournament.

Seniors help take PL crown

The AU men's basketball team clinched the Patriot League regular season title with a late rally over the U.S. Naval Academy Wednesday night. Down one point with less than two minutes to go, the Eagles came from behind to beat Navy 64-59. The Eagles quickly jumped out to an early lead over the Midshipmen but couldn't sustain it through the rest of the game.

Wrestling brief

Nationally ranked AU junior wrestler Mike Cannon finished the season with a perfect 26-0 record Feb. 15 against Bucknell University, but it wasn't enough to lift the Eagles past a strong Bison squad. Cannon, ranked second in the nation in the 174-pound weight class, finished the day with a 6-0 decision over the Bison's Riccio, while the Eagles narrowly lost 19-17.

Track and Field brief

AU senior runner Carlos Jamieson raced his way to a first place finish in the 5000 meters at the Patriot League indoor track championship at the U.S. Naval Academy Saturday. Jamieson was the only individual representative of the AU men's track team and finished the 5K with a personal best time of 14:25.


LAY-IN - Senior point guard Derek Mercer goes up for a lay up against a College of the Holy Cross defender in the Eagles 56-50 win. Mercer finished the game with 11 points on 4-12 shooting. The Eagles are now 10-1 in Patriot League play and 18-7 overall.

Second half surge lifts AU past Holy Cross

Despite a slow start, AU senior guard Garrison Carr's game-high 28 points helped lead the Eagles past their rival, College of the Holy Cross Saturday. Both teams came out at the beginning of the game and struggled to get their offenses going. After five minutes, both teams had a combined total of 16 rebounds and only eight points.

Caps: surprise of the NHL

A three-goal third period helped propel Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to a 5-2 win over Sidney Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday. Ovechkin bolstered his argument for why he is the leagues best player with two points and nine shots on goal.

Seven straight for hoops

Senior guards Derrick Mercer and Garrison Carr continued to roll offensively, scoring 17 and 13 points, respectively in the Eagles' 58-36 victory over the Army Black Knights on Wednesday night. The win was the seventh straight for the team and 10th this year on the road - one of only five Division I teams to win 10 road games this season.

A big start and a strong finish were the perfect ingredients for the AU women's basketball team to cruise to a 60-38 victory over the Colgate University Raiders Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Eagles' record to 8-2 in the Patriot League and 18-7 overall on the season.
