As AU gears up for the 2008-2009 men's basketball season, they will enjoy a 65th preseason ranking from Rivals.com - an improvement from last year's preview, when ESPN ranked the Eagles 243rd. But Head Coach Jeff Jones and his team aren't paying any mind. "It means nothing.

Senior captain attacker Irene Schickhardt's two second-half goals and junior goalie Alyssa Poorman's eight saves powered the 18th ranked AU field hockey team past Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in Tuesday's NCAA play-in game 2-0 and made it back into the first round of the NCAA tournament after missing the cutoff in 2007.

Corkery brings firery tempo to women's team

After a rollercoaster 2007-08 season, the AU women's basketball team comes into this season with a fresh approach and a new head coach. Matt Corkery, who was Melissa McFerrin's assistant for four years, replaces her as the Eagles' head coach. McFerrin, who left to become the head coach for the University of Memphis, stunned members of the team with her decision last spring.

Martinez lifts men's soccer, 3-2, in 2 OT

Junior forward Luis Martinez scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute of play Saturday, as the Eagles defeated Bucknell University 3-2 in their regular-season finale. The match ends the Eagle's season at 5-1-1 in the Patriot League and 9-7-2 overall, good enough for the second-seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Johnson keeping Caps alive

The Capitals returned home to take two games in a row and also found a secret weapon. Jose Theodore has been less than stellar overall this season and Coach Bruce Boudreau has turned to a new workhorse - Brent Johnson. Johnson is 2-0-1 in his last three starts and has a save percentage of .

Volleyball sweeps league opponents over weekend

The Patriot League championship is just two weeks away and the AU women's volleyball team is red hot, winning nine straight sets over a three-day span. AU beat North Carolina Central University Thursday, beat Lehigh University Friday and beat Lafayette College Saturday, all by a score of 3-0.

Sophomore forward Christine Fingerhuth was named the Patriot League tournament most valuable player after she scored the game-tying goal in the Eagles' 5-2 victory over the Bucknell University Bison during the team's sixth-straight Patriot League field hockey championship Sunday.

Volleyball suffers loss against VCU Rams

The AU women's volleyball team snapped their 13-game winning streak Tuesday night, falling 3-1 on the road to non-conference opponent Virginia Commonwealth University. The loss drops the Eagles' record to 18-7 on the season. AU took the early lead in the match, as they recorded a first set win 25-21 to go up 1-0 in the match.

Eagles beat Army for PL spot

The AU Eagles won 2-0 at the U.S. Military Academy on Monday afternoon, clinching a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. After this win, the Eagles improved their record to 8-7-2. Their record in conference play improved to 4-1-1. The Eagles pulled out to an early lead when freshman forward Jack Scott scored just over a minute into the game.

Eagles lose to Colgate, 1-0

The AU men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought decision on the road to Colgate University Saturday, losing to the Red Raiders 1-0. The defeat drops the Eagles record to 7-7-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in the Patriot League. The only scoring of the game came in the fourth minute of the match, as Colgate junior midfielder Alex Weekes took advantage of an Eagle defensive turnover and buried a shot from just outside the 18-yard box past freshman goalkeeper Matt Makowski to give Colgate the 1-0 lead.

Sukaj's experience lifts AU

Senior volleyball outside hitter Rubena Sukaj routinely kills records and aces competition in the Patriot League. However, she owes much of her success to her parents. Sukaj grew up in Tirana, Albania. It was because of her father and brother's love for sports that she got involved with volleyball at 12 years old.

McLaughlin sets tone for Eagles women's soccer

At five years old, Kelly McLaughlin stepped onto the soccer field and never looked back. "I played other sports, but I played soccer the most and decided to stick with it," she said. McLaughlin, a junior in the Kogod School of Business, is now a starting defenseman for AU's women's soccer team.

Women's soccer falls 2-1

The AU women's team concluded their regular season with a 2-1 defeat to Bucknell University Saturday, ending their chance to qualify for the Patriot League's postseason tournament. The loss ends the Eagles' season record at 5-10-4 and 2-2-3 within the league.

Field hockey splits last two games

The AU Eagles' field hockey team finished its season strong with four victories and one loss in its last five games after it beat Lehigh University 6-0 Friday and lost 5-2 to 10th ranked Princeton University on Sunday. The Eagles dominated conference play, finishing the season 5-0 in the Patriot League and outscoring its Patriot League opponents 19-1.

Hobbling towards halftime

Now that the first half of the NFL season is over, it is clear that this season has been just plain mediocre and has given fans little to cheer about. The blame for this mediocrity rests in the laundry list of injuries plaguing NFL stars. There is essentially a Pro-Bowl team's worth of injured players this season.
