AU Eagles continue to climb the charts

After their wins against both Northeastern and Ohio State in the Terrapin Invitational, the AU field hockey team extended its winning record to 6-0, taking hold of ninth place in the 2007 STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll that was released on Tuesday.

Lost in translation: Sports done British style

Welcome to the first installment of "Across the Pond," where I will spend this semester looking at sports, London style. It seems that many things become lost in translation as one goes from American English to British English. For example, cookies are called biscuits, Three Musketeers bars are actually what we call Milky Ways and, something we are all familiar with, unlike Americans the English drive on the "wrong" side of the road.

Hoyas ruin AU Eagles' 4-0 record

The AU women's soccer team was unable to score against its local rivals, the Georgetown Hoyas, leaving AU to suffer its first season loss in a 1-0 game yesterday. The Eagles and the Hoyas played a solid first half. AU registered four shots on goal, including forward Krystn Hodge's attempt to score with just over 18 minutes remaining in the half.

Pride fills AU Eagle volleyball seniors

Along with outstanding sportsmanship, high academic standards and remarkable game stats, the sense of camaraderie shown by the women's volleyball team is undeniably one of its most impressive qualities. However, more impressive still is the dedication shown by the seniors.

Volleyball undergoes another hard weekend

The AU Eagles women's volleyball team lost its sixth straight match on Saturday, falling to the University of North Carolina 3-2 during the UNC Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The loss was the Eagles' third in the past two days, following a pair of 3-1 losses to Villanova earlier that day and Western Kentucky on Friday afternoon.

Men's soccer succeeds in first two home games

In its home opening games Friday and Sunday, the AU men's soccer team crushed opponents in a double win against Princeton University and Bowling Green. The Eagles started its 2-0 domination over the Princeton Tigers early into its Friday game. The intensity level and persistence was strong as AU attempted 10 shots past the Princeton keeper, including a shot by freshman Jamie Davin that hit the crossbar.

AU Eagles keep perfect 4-0 record

The AU Eagles women's soccer team registered another win on Sunday, defeating Buffalo 3-0 in the Niagara Fall Classic. The win was the Eagles' second of this weekend following a 2-1 advance over Niagara on Friday. Sophomore Kelsey Brasher started the scoring for the Eagles in Friday's game against Niagara.

Men's soccer captures win against Mason

Despite its 2-0 loss Friday to George Washington University, the men's soccer team was able to pull through Sunday and beat George Mason University 2-1 to officially start its 2007 season. Even with several goal attempts at the end of the game, the Eagles was unable to catch the GW Colonials on Friday.


Junior Midfielder Megan Henry plays keep away with her opponent from Princeton in Sunday's game. The Eagles won 3-2 in the second game of the weekend, bringing the team's record to 4-0 and placing them in the No. 12 rank for the Patriot League.

Sudden death victory, Eagles live on

AU Eagles field hockey brought excitement to the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex this weekend, beginning with a sudden death victory win in Friday's game against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, and ending in a 3-2 success against the Princeton Tigers on Sunday.

Eagle's cross country opens season with first and second place

The AU cross country teams began their 2007 season on Friday with a great start. Both a first place finish for the women's team, and a second place finish for the men's team at the Mount St. Mary Invitational, put the Eagles in a good starting position for the season.

Lady Eagle hat trick leads AU to winning soccer record

It was a winning weekend full of first-time goals for the AU women's soccer team. Sophomore Kelsey Brasher's first career hat trick led the Eagles to a season opening 4-1 win on Friday against the Manhattan College Jaspers. First season goals by senior Irene Karistinos and sophomore Mary Riegler led the team to a 3-0 defeat over the University of Richmond Spiders on Sunday as well.

Volleyball fails to bring home a win this weekend

The women's volleyball team traveled to Provo, Utah, to participate in the Brigham Young University Molton Classic this past weekend. While the team did not emerge victorious, several players broke personal records. The team, undefeated before the tournament, played three games in two days and finished Saturday with a record of 4-3.

AU Eagle soccer prepares for new season to come

Men's soccer The AU men's soccer team finished the preseason with a 1-1 record, falling to No. 21 Old Dominion at Reeves Field on Saturday. This loss follows a previous 3-0 victory the Eagles recorded on the road the preceding weekend against Radford. The team opens its regular season in the annual D.

AU field hockey starts year with win

The AU Eagles field hockey team kicked off its season with a clean sweep this past weekend at the Spider Classic in Richmond, Va. Beginning with a 5-1 win against the Radford Highlanders on Saturday and finishing off with a final score of 4-0 against the Richmond Spiders on Sunday, the Eagles proved that this season the team mean business on the field.

Eagles remain strong against Howard

In a match against Howard University Tuesday night, the women's volleyball team lived up to its coach's expectations of "attacking early" and continuing its flawless record. Winning the match 3-0, the team served aggressively and managed to execute perfect plays.

Equestrian team bucks up with new barn and a fresh outlook

The American University club equestrian team is ponying up for a makeover, making moves to alter the program including hiring a new trainer and finding a new barn to hang their horseshoes next season. The team, which has trained in Maryland since its creation in 2003, has elected to move from its previous facility at Clay Hill Stables in Springdale to Windcrest Farms in Clarksburg, where it hopes improved training conditions and more personal attention will help raise the team's level of competition.

Track competes at Penn Relays

This past weekend, the AU men's track team headed to its most competitive meet thus far, the 113th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. "We were accepted into all three championship races [DMR, 4 x Mile and 4 x 800m] which is a great honor," head coach Matt Centrowitz said to Aueagles.

Lacrosse drops Patriot League championship game to Holy Cross

In a scene that has become all too familiar for AU fans during the 2006-2007 sports season, the Eagles lost to Holy Cross in yet another Patriot League tournament game. This time, it was the AU lacrosse team that was defeated by the Crusaders in the PL title game 12-8, preventing the team from reaching the NCAA tournament.
