Life after Ingram: The future of AU men's basketball

Although it hasn't been pretty for most of the year, right now you have to give our men's basketball team all the credit in the world. Sure they have beaten four of the lower seeds in the league, but anytime a team can win four in a row, especially to end the year, the feat is impressive, and it appears the Eagles are getting hot exactly when they needed to.

Basketball takes first-round game over Colgate

Andre Ingram scored a game-high 16 points and the Eagles held Colgate to 1-15 shooting from three-point range to earn a 59-44 victory in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Bender Arena. The Eagles jumped out to a 14-point lead early in the second half, but the Raiders held AU to just two points in a four-minute span to cut the lead to eight.

Women win home finale over Lafayette

The AU women's basketball team led from the opening whistle to the final buzzer on Saturday, defeating Lafayette 60-46 in the final home game of the season. With the victory, the Eagles clinched the fourth seed in the Patriot League tournament and will face Navy in Annapolis, Md.

Seniors go out with win over Lafayette in last regular season game

With just a little under three minutes gone by in the second half and the Eagles holding a six-point lead, senior Brayden Billbe had a clear look at the basket and went for a lay-up that was blocked by Lafayette's Ted Detmer, Billbe's third straight missed field goal.

The NBA in Vegas means everyone wins

I was sick over the weekend and was lucky enough to stay in and watch 72 hours of the NBA's All-Star weekend from Las Vegas. However, I first have to comment on the shocking elimination of Mr. Boston on "I Love New York." Mr. Boston, who lists "Taxicab Confessions" as one of his favorite shows on his MySpace, was the best thing about one of the best shows on TV.

Men's basketball clinches first-round home game

Four Eagles scored in double figures as AU won its third game in a row, 71-60 over Navy on Tuesday night in Annapolis. With the victory, AU (14-13, 6-7 Patriot League) clinched fourth place in the conference and will host a first-round game in the PL tournament.

Eagle Sports brief: Navy sinks women's hoops

Despite a career-high 24 points from Nicole Ryan, the AU women's basketball team fell to Navy on Wednesday night, 65-58. The loss drops the Eagles into a three-way tie for fourth place with Navy and Lafayette. After giving up the game's opening basket on a three-pointer, the Eagles took its first and only lead of the game on a jumper by Abby Lipskis to go up 4-3.

Women's bball falls to Crusaders, 61-54

First-half struggles plagued the Eagles once again on Saturday as the team fell behind early in their loss to Holy Cross, 61-54. The defeat gives the Crusaders sole possession of third place in the Patriot League and drops AU into a tie with Lafayette for fourth at 5-7 in the league.

Recent turnaround has men's basketball seniors thinking about one last run at Patriot League title

With the most experienced roster in the Patriot League and confidence after a successful offseason trip to Europe, the AU men's basketball team began the season with dreams of winning the school's first Patriot League championship. After starting out the season with a 9-2 record, the Eagles appeared to be ready to make some noise in conference play, but a 3-7 start left the team looking for answers.

Swim teams make splash to start PLs

It was a big weekend for AU swimming as both the men's and women's teams traveled to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., to compete in the Patriot League Championships, their biggest meet of the season. On Friday, junior Meghan Thiel defended her title in the 500 free, keeping a steady pace of 29 seconds per a lap for a 4:49.

Lax takes first season opener since 2002

In their first season-opening victory since 2002, the AU women's lacrosse team defeated Davidson on Saturday, 9-5, at Maryland's Women's Lacrosse Complex. The Eagles began the first game of the 2007 season in an early hole, when Davidson's Cheli Bleda scored just under two minutes into the first half.

Wrestlers snap 4-match losing streak

The AU wrestlers faced off against the East Stroudsburg Warriors in their last dual meet of the season on Saturday, and came away with a win to bring their record to 9-10 for the season. Wrestling by Pennsylvania rules, the match started at the 197-lb weight class with redshirt junior Evan Murtaugh, who took a forfeit.

Eagle Sports brief: Track competes at PL Championships

February 19

On the final day of the Patriot League Championships on Sunday, the American University men's track team won league titles in the 800, 1,000 meters and mile, placing fourth in the team standings. AU swept the top four spots in the mile, led by junior Brendan Fennell, who took first with a final time of 4:06.

Men's hoops in PL picture with win over Army

Andre Ingram led all scorers with 15 points and AU scored 38 points in the second half to pull away for a 64-49 victory over Army on Wednesday night at Bender Arena. The Eagles led by just three points early in the second half, but broke the game open with a 20-4 run that was capped off by back to back three-pointers by Arvydas Eitutavicius and Garrison Carr.
