After running the slowest time ever by an AU team in the four-by-mile relay at last year's prestigious Penn Relays, Brian McCabe, Brendan Fennell, Conor Lanz and Steve Hallinan entered this year's competition looking for redemption. "We were really disappointed last year," said Lanz, a junior.
Back in the fall, President Benjamin Ladner was unceremoniously removed from office at AU after discrepancies in his contract's salary. Now it seems as if his name will also be removed from one of the AU Crew team's boats after a boat-renaming raffle held this week.
Despite a late-game comeback, the AU women's lacrosse team dropped their first-round Patriot League Tournament match to Colgate, 12-7, at Hart Turf Field in Worcester, Mass. Down by two with just under 13 minutes to play, the Eagles showed signs of revival with a goal by junior Sarah Milewski to pull AU within one.
History repeated itself on Sunday as the AU men's tennis team fell to Army in the finals of the Patriot League championship held in West Point, N.Y. The Eagles had just pulled off a dominating victory against Navy on Saturday, defeating them 4-0 in the semi-finals.
So what's the deal with AU not having any spirit? Let's blame Benjamin Ladner. Blame Joni Comstock. Blame the basketball team. Blame the pep band. Blame this newspaper. Let's reinvent the fight song and logo yet again to inject a sense of tradition in a 113-year-old institution that still somehow lacks it.
How convenient that in the last week of this column, we have probably our biggest week of the semester. We have the NBA and NHL playoffs, and, as I said last week, the most media-hyped event in the world, the NFL Draft (or Mel Kiper Invitational). Truth: The Devils will win the Stanley Cup.
Coming off of a successful indoor season, the AU track team has continued its success, with four Eagles qualifying to compete at the NCAA East Regional. Senior Keira Carlstrom qualified in the 5,000-meter event, while senior Zaia Wharton qualified in the 800.
Lane's career game helps end losing streak Sophomore midfielder Jackie Lane registered a career-high six points to lead the AU women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over host Longwood Monday. Lane's four-goal, two-assist output in the Eagles' regular-season finale ended their five-game losing streak.
With the school year winding down, most students have likely been consumed with homework, group projects and papers leading up to final exams. Academically, it's a stressful time for most, as we rush to cram a semester's worth of information into our heads in order to prepare for a few remaining tests, which will determine our final grades.
When many people see the words "AU Crew" on the backs of jackets or sweatshirts around campus, they may ask themselves, "What is crew?" It's the official term for team rowing. Here at AU, it's a club team that is rising in popularity and climbing the ladder toward the more elite teams on the East Coast.
Although equestrian may seem like an obscure sport to many, AU's club team has drawn attention to itself by making noteworthy progress. The team, long dormant, was revitalized in fall 2003 by juniors Lana Ciaramella and Jesse Loutoo. "I came to AU knowing that there wasn't a team, but after I got here I knew I couldn't go that long without riding," Ciaramella said.
Fans at AU women's lacrosse games this season may have thought they were seeing double in the form of a quick redhead who always seemed to be at the net, scoring on her own assists. Their eyes were not deceiving: It really was two people, Jackie and Lauren Lane.
The first month of the baseball season is coming to a close, and it could have gone much better for the Washington Nationals. They lost nine of their first 12 games before winning four games last week against the lowly Marlins and Phillies. Off the field, Nationals general manager Jim Bowden was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence in Florida.
The AU men's tennis team was defeated in its final regular-season match ever Sunday, 4-2, to Army, which sealed the right to host the Patriot League tournament. The match was originally scheduled to be the Eagles' last home match, but it was forced to be relocated to the University of Maryland College Park due to inclement weather.
The AU women's lacrosse team's offense fell flat when it managed just one second-half goal as the Eagles fell, 14-5, at Bucknell Saturday. It was the fifth consecutive loss for AU (5-11, 3-3 Patriot League), which clinched the third seed in next weekend's conference tournament.
After losing 10 out of its first 12 matches this spring, the AU women's tennis team could have given up on its final two. But, following a 4-3 victory over Colgate, the Eagles dominated their last outing ever, winning all seven matches over Manhattan Tuesday afternoon to send the program out on a two-match winning streak.
As the women's tennis team played its last match Tuesday, I couldn't help but reminisce on the history of women's tennis. You see, its history is one of struggle for the equality of women, not just in sports, but in other social issues. When I look back at these courageous individuals, these are the women who made it possible for girls to play their hearts out any way they wanted.
Spring is officially here. With baseball in full swing, the NFL Draft approaching and all kinds of winter sports playoffs, there's plenty to talk about. But, we'll start off with something none of us want to talk about. Truth: The media is making way too big of a deal about the Duke Lacrosse rape scandal.
The men's tennis team is gearing up for its most important match of the year against Army on Sunday for the right to host the Patriot League tournament. Currently the Eagles and the Black Knights are battling at the top of the conference standings. Both teams are undefeated in league play.
