September 2005 will not be remembered as the brightest moment in American University's history. But, I'm getting sick and tired of hearing people complain about money misspent for things that don't affect the school. So, ion honor of my frustration, I'm going to complain about the thousands of dollars AU did spend for a "good reason.

Despite late slide, Nats' have a base to build on

·

The bubble of the Washington Nationals' dream inaugural season finally burst Sunday. The team's 6-5 loss to the New York Mets mathematically eliminated the Nats from the playoff race. (By most accounts, their prospects had been slim for the last week or so.

Men's soccer's victory is worth the wait

After 90 tenuous minutes of regulation and 10 more of overtime could not break a 1-1 tie, the AU and Lafayette men's soccer teams huddled in front of their benches. Depleted players scurried for water bottles, anxious coaches dictated strategy for the second overtime, and in AU's huddle, Sal Caccavale dictated some of his own.

AL MVP: Who's it going to be?

With only a few weeks left in the season, the MVP race in the American League is once again wide open. After all, it was last year when Vladimir Guerrero put the Angels on his back and pulled them into the playoffs, winning the MVP award along the way. So it seems about that time to take stock of the race, and the three main contenders.

Coerced retirement insulting to love of the game

As a 23-year-old who's young at heart, one of the few ways to make growing up tolerable is to embrace the scenes of my youth. Maybe not the cloudy haze that once possessed my car on Saturday nights, but rathersuch times as when I scored 30 points in a middle school basketball game.

Redoing a dome and city

When people think of the Superdome in 25 years, they won't be thinking of the memorable sports moments that have occurred there, but the shocking and horrific images of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Superdome has been home to Super Bowls, Final Fours and heavyweight championship matches.

Field hockey fends off pesky Tigers

Thankfully coaches don't get paid for pretty wins alone, otherwse AU field hockey coach Steve Jennings would need a temporary loan. After an arduous win Sunday against Towson, 2-1, nobody sees the problem more than him. The Eagles (7-0) found another victory for the standings, but uncovered a new issue: effort.

Three hours ahead, but several steps behind

One of these days, AU volleyball coach Barry Goldberg will tell you, his team is going to pull off the big win. It's all just a matter of keeping on doing what they're doing and sooner or later, they're bound to get a break. That's what the Eagles (5-4) will be hoping for this weekend in San Diego in their last chance against powerhouse programs before the NCAA tournament in December.

Hoyas drop slumping women's soccer

The AU women's soccer team suffered yet another tough loss Wednesday, 2-0, at Georgetown, dropping its season record to 2-5-0. After a scoreless first half, the Hoyas (5-1-1) dominated the second stanza, taking eight shots, including four on goal. As has been a problem throughout this season, the Eagles struggled to maintain the energy level they had in the first half.

Coolio, Korea, Conte... and a Kodiak bear

Let me give you a little insight into what I've been thinking about for the past week: Why do people in the town continue to follow the Redskins? Don't you understand that Paris Hilton spends money more wisely than Dan Snyder? I understand they were good 10 years ago, but so was Coolio.

Please, let gridiron dreams burn out

Each fall, I return to Nebraska Avenue psyched about the upcoming collegiate soccer, field hockey, and volleyball seasons. Sure, the annual thrill of dropping dead inches short of a Patriot League men's basketball title and an NCAA bid each March is worth the price of tuition alone.

AU drubs Drexel for first win of '05

Finally, the AU men's soccer game won its first game of the year Sunday at Reeves Field, pummeling Drexel 5-0 on a therapeutic afternoon for what, until then, had been a frustrated offense. The Eagles (1-2-1) pounded a staggering 29 shots toward Drexel's goal, while the Dragons (1-1-1) rarely threatened AU's end.
