Army finally bests AU in PL

·

With the Patriot League Men's Tennis championship tied, 3-3, and with all other Army and AU players finished, the burden of winning the PL title fell to No. 5 seeds Jeffery Schnell, an AU sophomore, and Army's Eddie Kang. Some fans craned their necks to see three courts over, while others meandered from the bleachers to the other side of the courts to peer through the fence and cheer on Schnell, who fought to break Kang's vicious serve.

Is the Nats' bandwagon well-built?

·

Be warned. This is another Nationals column. These days they're about as plentiful as District pedestrians donning blue or red baseball caps bearing the cursive W. (If the proliferation of columns and caps counts toward a team's future success, the city should plan the World Series parade now.

The view from atop the Nats' dugout

·

On Sunday, the new mascot for the Washington Nationals was presented, or should I say hatched. He broke out of his egg at the first afternoon game in Nationals history, much to the delight of everyone in the park. Recently I was able to get an exclusive interview with the new mascot in which he answered all the burning questions people want answered.

From chopping block to PL champs?

Promising late efforts boost hope of title

If things had gone as planned earlier this semester, the AU Golf team might have entered this weekend's Patriot League championship with its off-the-course situation on its mind. But now, with the team ensured one more year of play before its elimination, the Eagles can head to the Bucknell University Golf Course with their minds on something else: winning their first PL championship.

By KEVIN HILGERS Eagle Staff Writer If things had gone as planned earlier this spring, the AU Golf team might have entered this weekend's Patriot League championship with its off-the-course situation on its mind. But now, with the team ensured one more year of play before its elimination, the Eagles can head to the Bucknell University Golf Course with their minds on something else: its first PL championship and trip to the AU finished the spring with two strong finishes after taking first at the Lafayette Invitational and second at George Washington's Bethany Beach Invitational.

Keeping payers, players separate

By now everyone has seen the tape. New York Yankee Gary Sheffield goes to get the ball from in front of the bleachers and is "interfered with" by a fan at Boston's Fenway Park. Sheffield semi-retaliates, but the incident is thwarted before it escalates. Major League Baseball has said it will probably not take action against Sheffield, and the fan also will not be punished.

For Field Hockey, home turf finally in sight

'Gate drops AU lax, 13-8

There was a positive vibe building up for the AU Women's Lacrosse team's home match Saturday against first-place Colgate. AU had just come off a strong showing in a loss to No. 11 Johns Hopkins, and pregame workouts left everyone eager to play. After a lengthy postgame lecture from coach Ashley Flanigan that transformed into a conference between her and team leaders, it was clear that Saturday's 13-8 loss to the Red Raiders sucked out that positive feeling - not to mention a shot at playing the Patriot League championship in Washington.

Jaysingh will be missed, but not yet

Already down a set, senior Juan Jaysingh trailed 5-2 in the second set against Howard's Kenneth Brown, who chipped, volleyed and charged the net all match long Wednesday, never letting AU's team captain find his rhythm. But before it ended, Jaysingh adapted.

D.C.'s Nats fit the city like a glove

Monumental occasions usually occur following negative events, but today marks a monumental occasion for a good reason. Remember where you are today as the national pastime returns to the national city. The Washington Nationals are bringing baseball back to the nation's capital for the first time since 1971, giving Major League Baseball something to be proud of in a time marred by steroid scandals and a few dominant teams killing the competitive feel.

No. 11 Hopkins survives pesky AU

The last 11 minutes of the first half of Tuesday's match at Reeves Field looked good for the AU Women's Lacrosse team. No. 11 Johns Hopkins, with the ninth best offense in the nation, didn't score once, while the upset-minded Eagles got a pair of goals from junior midfielder Moriah Linnell to trail by two at halftime.

Women's Tennis struggles, but together

In what has been one of the toughest seasons for any team at AU, the Women's Tennis team lost again Tuesday to Howard, 5-2. Yet considering the state of the AU tennis program and the team's 17-match losing streak, the effort alone is enough to draw praise from its followers.
