Eagles lose three hours, two games in West Coast tournament

The AU Men's Soccer team lost two games this weekend in the Matador Soccer Invitational in California. The Eagles fought hard but came up one goal short in both games, first losing Friday night to Cal State, Northridge 4-3, and then Sunday morning to Loyola Marymount, 3-2.

Slammers face No. 1

After clawing for every single point they earned in a 3-0 loss to the two-time defending national champions, University of Southern California, on Friday night, the Eagles pulled together to oust the University of Miami (Ohio) 3-1 on Saturday to win third place in the State Farm Illinois Classic, hosted by the University of Illinois.

When the AU Men's Soccer team came from a goal down to defeat Georgetown 2-1 on Monday afternoon and clinch the D.C. College Cup at Reeves Field, one thing became clear - this is not last year's team. That team went 7-9-1 and never had a come-from-behind victory.

Eagles start season on right footing

The AU women's soccer team beat a gritty Mount St. Mary's 3-2 in its season opener Tuesday at Reeves Field. But while the Eagles won, their performance displayed both their offensive firepower and their defensive inconsistency. Senior forward Maha Elnabawi scored a dramatic game-winner with five minutes left to finally secure a victory after numerous chances.

After a freshman college season that took him up and down, Eagles' sophomore golfer Todd Shagin set his sights on the 2004 United States Amateur Golf Tournament. Shagin set out on his quest to make the 104th U.S. Amateur at Royce Brook Country Club in Somerville, N.J.

Soccer stripped down during offseason

In 2003, most thought 2004 would be "the year" for the AU men's soccer team. But after a crazy, volatile and ultimately disappointing season last year, an older, wiser but depleted squad is taking things one step at a time. "The only expectation I've given these guys," said AU head coach Todd West, "is to work harder than everyone else, and to play as a team."

Volleyball team looks to extend PL win streak

Having amassed a 49-0 Patriot League record over the past three years, it comes as no surprise that the AU volleyball team is again expected to be the class of the league in 2004. Despite the graduation of 2003 All-American and three-time Patriot League Player of the Year Karla Kucerkova, 15-year veteran coach Barry Goldberg and his players have spent the past year focused on continuing their league dominance and breaking onto the national scene.

Oh where may the Expos lay?

The years of uncertainty about baseball's Montreal Expos might finally come to a head this month. The Associated Press recently reported that league officials will decide where to put the struggling franchise after the July 13 All-Star Game, and Northern Virginia and D.C. seem to be the frontrunners.

AU asst. coach runs in 1,500 m Olympic semifinals

Sean O'Brien, an AU assistant track coach and former AU track athlete, placed No. 21 of 24 competitors in the 1,500-meter run semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Sacramento, Calif. on Friday, July 16, according to the USA Track & Field Web site, www.usatf.org.

Former AU athlete killed, 'of interest' in murder cases

Jarion Childs, a standout defensive star and leader for the AU men's basketball team from 1997-2000, was shot and killed in his hometown of Groton, Conn. after breaking into a Dairy Queen shortly after midnight on June 28. His death has been ruled a homicide, according to WFSB, a news channel in Connecticut. Since then, Childs has also been named a "person of interest" involved in murder.
