AU romps Crusaders in Patriot League opener

When AU plays Holy Cross in any sport one thing is for sure: you will always get both teams' best effort, no matter what the records. The Holy Cross Crusaders played the AU Women's Soccer team (3-3-1) strong but succumbed to the continuous Eagle pressure early into the second half, losing the game 4-1.

Women jump to 2-0 in PL

Freshman Elizabeth Maloney entered Saturday evening's Women's Volleyball match against Lafayette with hardly any offense to her credit. That changed by the end of the night. The outside hitter pounded out three kills, including the match winner, to push the Eagles (5-8, 2-0) easily past the Leopards (5-10, 0-2) 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-20).

Eagles fall 0-1 to Big Red

AU Men's Soccer's home opener against Cornell (1-3) looked like a mismatch on paper. When Cornell mid-fielder Tom Marks was ejected just a few seconds into the second half, the road to victory seemed even easier. And when junior AU 'keeper Thomas Myers saved Cornell defender Scott Palguta's penalty kick minutes later, the Eagles appeared to escape a major mistake unharmed.

Soccer purist laments lame World Cup

The U.S. Women's National Soccer team opened its 2003 World Cup campaign in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, beating Sweden 3-1. As a huge soccer fan, I could not pass up the opportunity to see a match of this level and cheer the lady Yanks to victory.

Nothing went according to plan for AU Men's Soccer this weekend. First, Hurricane Isabel tore through the mid-Atlantic, shutting the school down for Thursday and Friday. Then, Saturday's match at George Mason was changed from a night game to a day game, and moved to an intramural field.

Eagles win one but lose the AU Classic

After AU Volleyball dropped its first two games Saturday night against No. 15 Michigan State's watertight defense, the Eagles might as well have been left for dead, but they just refused to die. The Eagles (3-8) staged a ferocious comeback in the last two games and fought off game point four times, but it was not enough to overcome the Spartans (8-2), who won the match 3-1 (30-19, 30-22, 34-36, 30-26).

As of now, Ohio State running back Maurice Clarrett's future remains uncertain. Suspended by OSU for the 2003 season for violating NCAA rules, he has several options. He can transfer to I-AA Grambling, where he would not be forced to sit out the start of next season.

Colleges collide for AU Classic

It's rare that big-money schools send their elite teams to AU's tiny corner in Northwest, D.C. A variety of St. Francises (Pennsylvania and New York) will drop by but nary a St. John's. Heck, Maryland won't even make the jaunt into the city, although maybe that's for the best, lest Terps fans storm Bender Arena while Eagles fans stay in bed to watch "Crossfire" reruns.

Field Hockey team beats Rutgers, 4-0

AU Field Hockey came out playing flat under an overcast sky Sunday at the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md. But sunlight eventually broke through, along with the Eagles' offense. AU (4-1-0) used an explosive second half to complete a 4-0 smacking of Rutgers (3-4-0).
