Eagles fade late, lose to Holy Cross 69-54

The AU men’s basketball team battled against the defending Patriot League champions the Holy Cross Crusaders but eventually came up short, losing 69-54. Bender Arena was mostly full for senior day, in which all of the team’s graduating players were honored before the game.

Last January’s first annual “Eagle Sports Awards” began with a quote from Olympic champion Mark Spitz about breaking records; this year, as The Eagle honors the best athletes of 2016, it seems only appropriate to quote one of AU’s own Olympians from this past year.

Straight from print: Andrija Matic, AU’s next great big man

This article originally appeared in The Eagle’s December 9 special edition. When basketball player and current sophomore Andrija Matic established himself as a key rotation player last season, it gave the Eagles something they hadn’t had in years: a good, solid “big man.” Since Tony Wroblicky graduated in 2014, the AU men’s basketball team has struggled to find consistent frontcourt play.
